It weighs approximately the same as a troy ounce (31.1 g).The tolar was intended to replace gold coins due to a shortage of gold. The name Thaler (Czech: tolar) comes from the 16th century after the tolar minted in Jáchymov (Joachimsthal), German: Joachimsthaler. The tolar quickly spread throughout the German-speaking area and gave its name to the American dollar.During the reign of Rudolf II, the high artistic level of the coins and medals was contributed by important artists of the Emperor's Prague court, especially A.
